Lighting and Heating:
The proper lighting/heating is a very important factor in the well being of your chameleon. First, a proper watt heat bulb is to be placed in one corner of the top of the cage, above the screening. Make sure that the chameleon can not come in contact with the bulb, as he/she will get burnt. Also, a 5.0 UVB fluorescent bulb is required; “Zoo-med Repti-sun 5.0 is recommended by veterinarians and many breeders and hobbyists worldwide.) These bulbs will ensure that the chameleons will get the proper UV absorption, which will help prevent and reverse metabolic bone disease.
A thermometer should be bought to check the temperatures. A basking spot of 95 degrees and a ambient cage temperature of 75 degrees is preferred. Panther chameleons adjust very well to all sorts of environments, but over long periods of time, improper husbandry conditions will take a toll on them. The conditions mentioned above have worked best for us. |
