Hydration:
Watering chameleons can often be very tricky. Chameleons are arboreal (lives in the trees), so since there are no lakes in the jungle canopy, chameleons will very rarely drink from water dishes. Instead, they rely on drops of water formed on leaves and branches from dew and rain. The two best ways to water your chameleon is by using an automatic misting system, or creating a drip system. If using an automatic misting system, the work is minimal. The nozzles will produce a fine mist on each cage automatically by a pump and a timer. If creating a dripping system, simply puncture a pinhole on the bottom of a plastic or Styrofoam (Styrofoam preferred) cup, fill it with water, and place it on top of the chameleons enclosure, over the chameleons plant. The water should drip at a rate of 1 drop every 2-3 seconds. The water will drip from the cup and cascade down onto the leaves below inside the cage. However a catch pan may be necessary. While these are much cheaper than a misting system, they also require more work. In addition to a drip system, a handheld spray bottle is to be used to deliver a mist onto the leaves and branches at least once a day. Luke warm water is recommended in all methods. |
