Housing:
Panther chameleons are one of the
few species that do well in captivity, however a few basic husbandry parameters must be met. Proper caging is paramount in keeping your pet chameleon healthy. Chameleons are almost always kept best in cages, as they will normally die in aquariums or glass enclosures due to upper respiratory infections caused by build up of bacteria on the glass. Cages provide the proper air ventilation for chameleons to thrive. Males require a minimum cage size of 18”x24”x48”, however females will tolerate a minimum cage size of 18”x24”x24” (LxWxH). These cages are relatively easy to build out of wood and aluminum screening or hardware cloth, but they are also readily available commercially from many sources. If you are building your own cage, be sure that the bottom of the cage is constructed out of a hard plastic like high density polystyrene or polyethylene. PVC sheeting may also be used. A minimum of 1/8” is required. Also, see to it that the screening is insect proof now, as you will save yourself many headaches in the future.
Many designs and plans are posted online and in books on building cages. Building them yourself will save you lots of money, but it will cost you much of your time
