General Care:
The panther chameleon is indigenous to the semi-hot, and humid regions of Madagascar, inhabiting from the Northwestern coast, all the way to the east coast. They eat a wide variety of insects and small invertebrates, and are infamous for being cannibalistic. Males can grow up to 20 inches, while females max out at about 12 inches. Panther chameleons can be very territorial, and will act in a very aggressive manner towards each other if one “crosses the boundary”. Panther chameleons often fight to the death over territory, or about females in their territory. Panther chameleons must be housed separately and NOT in groups. They are solitary animals which prefer to live alone, with the exception of breeding attempts. A panther chameleon’s color can range from banana yellow, to fire engine red, to turquoise blue, to lime green. Some panthers often have every color of the rainbow, while others will have primarily one color. The average lifespan for a male is 5-8 years, while females generally live up to 2-3 years. Every chameleon has it’s own personality, but NO chameleon likes to be handled. However, some will tolerate it better than others. Some chameleons are very aggressive and will not tolerate any handling, and will bite the first chance they get, while others will crawl onto you when the cage is opened. No two chameleons have the same personality.
