Panther chameleons will consume most insect species along with some small invertebrates. Crickets, roaches and silkworms should be offered to your chameleon as the “staple food”. This can be fortified with mealworms, super worms, butter worms and other insects; fire flies and anything with stingers or poison is strongly cautioned against. Adult panthers can be fed every other day, while gravid females, juveniles and babies are best fed on a daily basis. The more varied the diet the better. This will ensure that the chameleon doesn’t get “bored” of the same food item day after day.
If the cage is insect proof, the insects can free roam. Be sure to remove any remaining insects by night to ensure that the chameleon doesn’t get eaten by the insects while sleeping. Free roaming insects are preferred to give the chameleon exercise and sharpen it’s hunting skills, however placing the insects in a large deli cup, or hand feeding are also good methods. Be careful if you are allowing super worms to free roam, as they are infamous for burying themselves in the dirt of the potted plant.
